My first twenty-five years.

Kate at Every Mile A Memory did a post on the first thirty years of her life, which inspired me to write about what I've done in my first twenty five years...

In my first twenty-five years I have...

Climbed the Mayan pyramids.

Witnessed the miracle of birth - and the loss of life.

Seen the joy on my parents face when I graduated college.

Sipped on champagne at the Louis Vuitton store on the Champs Elysees in Paris.

Walked on the beaches of Pearl Harbor and Normandy.

Taken the overnight train from Paris to the Cinque Terre in Italy.

Watched fireworks over our capital on the 4th of July.

Traveled via cable car in San Francisco and subway in NYC.

Snowboarded a black diamond ... my first time snowboarding, on accident.  No bones were broken.

I've been a blonde, brunette, and redhead.

Spent way too much money on heels that looked amazing - but were killer to wear.

Received my teaching credential.

Two-stepped with a cowboy.

Talked with Mel Gibson under the director's tent on a movie set.

Ate a Dodger Dog at Dodger Stadium

Stood beside my best friends as they've gotten married.

Broke down in a drive thru- by myself.

Been a lifeguard, retail sales associate, server, trainer, bartender and the most rewarding of them all TEACHER.

Watched the snow fall in Central Park.

Went white water rafting in North Carolina.

Drank moonshine and Dom Perignon.

Put dish soap in the dishwasher - and had to deal with the subsequent mess.

Walked to Trujillo's for a Phi Psi burrito at 3am.

Sat on my back porch and watched a southern summer thunderstorm.

Walked through the Vatican.

Almost ended things with a boy because he said he wasn't sure about marriage and kids...

a couple years later he outlook has changed :)

Have a wonderful Monday... xoxo.

WILW - Spring Essentials

Today I am linking up with Jamie for What I'm Loving Wednesday with some spring essentials.

Every girl needs a pair of aviators - I think they look flattering on just about everyone.  These are by Ralph Lauren and I love that the lenses are polarized - a must for sunny southern California.  I love them so much I just purchased my second pair.

I purchased these adorable coral flats from Pursona - one of my favorite boutiques from my hometown in Georgia.  They add a fun pop of color to any outfit.

Love this two-toned Michael Kors watch - it goes with everything.

I purchased this dress from The Blue Door Boutique {another fabulous boutique from my hometown}.  I love it because it zips which makes it easy to throw on over a bathing suit a go grab a margarita at a beach bar.   It also would look adorable with cowboy boots.

I can see myself wearing these and enjoying a Dodger dog at Dodger Stadium.  Nothing beats Dodger Stadium.

Zoya Wednesday from there Beach and Surf collection - this will be my go to color.

I love this hoodie I just purchased from VS Pink.   I am bummed because they didn't have a picture of the front but it is half zip and has a gold zipper.   It is a great pullover to throw on over a tee since it is warm in the day and chilly at night.

What are some of your spring must haves?

Crossroads

I have been quite in the blogging world lately - to be honest I have had a lot on my mind.

In December of 2009 I completed my student teaching.  I knew getting a teaching job for the next school year was going to be difficult because the local districts were all having to layoff teachers.  I was disappointed but tried to be optimistic that substitute teaching would put me in a good position to get hired and would give me more experience in the classroom.

Substitute teaching is not consistent so I have always kept my job as a server. Working two jobs means a lot of sixteen hour work days, but I got through it knowing it would pay off.

Fast forward to August 2011 - I got a phone call from the principal at the school I student taught at offering me the opportunity to open a classroom.  It was one of the best phone calls of my life - I would be teaching 4th grade alongside my supervising teacher from student teaching.  I was ecstatic and felt validated that my long workdays paid off.

About an hour later I got a phone call retracting the offer.  I am not going to go into details about what happened - it had nothing to with me personally, but I was devastated.

The school year began and it was back to subbing.  I was optimistic that because I almost got hired that I would be able to get hired for this upcoming school year.

Fast forward to the present - more layoffs and increased class sizes.  Eleven teachers at one of the schools I work at were pink slipped.  Teachers hired from as far back as 2003 (9 years ago) were pink slipped.  Now I know not all of these teachers will lose their jobs - but it's scary!

Now I am at a crossroads.  I would love, love, love to be a teacher in my heart - but my head is telling me that with everything going on in the education world right now it will not offer me the security teaching once had.  When I do get hired - which is not going to happen in the near future - I will probably get pink slipped each school year for awhile.  I do not want that.  I also know I can't continue to work the sixteen hour days - it's too much of a sacrifice and it is not going to pay off right now.  I am considering going back to school.  But that is a tough pill to swallow - I already went to college and got my degree.  When I started college I was a pre-nursing major and I am kicking myself for not continuing down that path.  Now at twenty-five I am considering going back to school to be a nurse....

Have you ever been at a crossroad?

Nana

Today would have been my Nana's 92nd birthday.  To celebrate her birthday I want to share one of my favorite memories of her.  When I sat down to write something to read at her memorial I wanted to share with our family and friends something that showed her "Nana" side, this is what I wrote...

When I was little all my friends had grandmothers and grandmas; I was the only one who had a Nana.  I came to learn that Nana’s were like grandmothers and grandmas because they were sweet like sugar but Nanas had spice.  My Nana used her spice to turn something boring and dull into something fun and memorable.  When I was four years old the morning of our annual trip to Mission Beach I came down with the chicken pox.  Doctor’s orders were no sun for one week. When my family arrived at the beach I was gloomy; not only did I have itchy bumps on my skin but my plans of swimming in the ocean and building sandcastles all day were on hold.  My Nana had her fair share of days in the sun and enjoyed relaxing in her orange umbrella chair on the sand much of the day so she didn’t mind spending time out of the sun with her granddaughter.  We passed the days doing art projects with seashells and playing cards.  Each and every night my Nana would take a paintbrush and paint calamine lotion on my chicken pox.  She then dressed me up in her jazzy earrings and placed a feather on the back of my head and I became Princess Specklefeather.  I am yet to meet someone who became a princess when they got the chicken pox and that’s why my Nana was so special.  This special memory along with many others I will always keep in my heart.  I have found some comfort in this quote, “When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.”
